Erik Hoel, P.Eng.
Structural Engineer and Company Founder
Erik Hoel, P.Eng., graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, Civil Engineering, from the University of Durham, England, in 1955. He began his engineering career as a Hydraulic Engineer with Norwegian Hydro in Oslo, Norway. Prior to immigrating to Canada in 1957, he was the District Airport Engineer for the Norwegian Air Force, responsible for the design and installation of major underground radar stations and airport construction in Western Norway.
He spent his first years in Canada as a Hydraulic Design Engineer with the Fraser River Board, doing preliminary designs for the larger hydro electric power stations on the Fraser River. For a short time he was a Materials Testing Engineer with a local Victoria consulting firm.
In 1959, Erik established his own engineering firm in Victoria, performing structural and municipal/land development engineering, and designing wastewater treatment and disposal systems. During the late sixties, in association with Fritz Schultze, Architect, Erik was responsible for the design of approximately 60 larger condos and housing units in the Victoria area, including the first high-rise apartment building in Victoria.
Unfortunately Erik passed away in October 2010. It seems his good-nature and practical engineering skills are needed elsewhere. He will be sadly missed.
Jan E. Hoel, Eng.L
Civil Engineer
Erik's son, Jan Hoel, born in Bergen, Norway has been a resident of Victoria since 1957. Jan became a partner in his father's business in 1978, when he graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
In 2001 he was approved by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC to practice Professional Engineering within his area of expertise.
Having worked his way up through the company since 1973, Jan has now assumed the responsibilities of CEO. He specializes in municipal/land development engineering, hydrology, storm and wastewater treatment and design.
Jan has done 1000s of land development designs, ranging in size from 1 to 100 lots. He has always been able to produce efficient, cost-effective designs, while always maintaining an appropriate level of sensitivity to the surrounding environment.
Jan utilizes the excellent working relationships that he has cultivated over the years with our Local and Senior Government Agencies, Contractors, and Developers to facilitate and expedite our clients' projects.
Ritchie C. Smith, P.Eng, MSc
Civil and Structural Engineer
Ritchie Smith, a native of Victoria, graduated from Mount Douglas Senior Secondary School with honors in 1994. Having received a full tuition academic scholarship, Ritchie studied Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah.
In 2001, Ritchie earned his Bachelor's degree, graduating Summa cum Laude (top one percent) from the highly acclaimed BYU College of Engineering.
Joining Hoel Engineering in 2001, while not busy with projects, Ritchie found the time to earn a Master's degree in Civil Engineering from BYU with a Business Management Minor, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.
Since then, Ritchie has managed hundreds of civil and structural projects.
Today, Ritchie spends most of his days managing structural engineering projects for Hoel Engineering and has an developed an enviable reputation for customer service and efficient, practical designs.
In addition to his civil and structural experience, Ritchie also has training and experience in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Architectural and Structural Drafting, and Traffic Engineering.
Dayn J. Hoel, Technician
Civil Construction Manager
Dayn Hoel, a native of Victoria since 1986, graduated from Belmont Secondary School in 2003. Dayn has gained 7-years experience working with a number of well-respected local contractors, gaining competency in civil and concrete construction practices along the way.
Dayn joined Hoel Engineering in 2010, and has already successfully managed several construction projects.
While not busy with these projects, Dayn provides technical assistance to design engineers on the construction aspects of a design.
While Dayn spends most of his time managing construction projects for Clients, he particularly enjoys the design-build opportunities that are available at Hoel Engineering.
Dayn also has training and experience with installing Sewage Disposal Systems, Building Drainage and Stormwatwer Management, as well as Demolishion and Concrete work.
